Bandcamp and the final Love Lockdown remix

A few weeks ago I found out about a new music hosting site called Bandcamp; as these are a dime a dozen these days I didn’t really pay it any heed. At some point I decided to look into things a little further, and the service they offer is pretty great. You upload a lossless file, and they put it into all different sorts of formats for you (mp3, ogg, flac, apple lossless). And you can sell tracks with them as well! From now on I’ll be using their service as my music page. (Just gotta figure out what I’m gonna do for posting up mixtapes as they’re not really set up for such things..)

My favorite part about that is how you can sell tracks on a donation basis, á la Radiohead and probably at least 40% of all the DIY punk house shows I’ve ever attended. I’ll be posting up a lot on there for free but also using it for all of my digital EP/LP releasing (new stuff on the way!).

Semi-related, I just finished up on my Love Lockdown remix. After Kanye posted up the studio stems (industry jive talk for tracked out sections of a song; ie vocals, drums, keys etc. all in their own audio files) I had to go back and expand upon my original ideas.

Oh and, there’s a crazy bonus track over in my music section I won’t mention here (yet). Well I guess aside from that—go check it out!

Ooh! Franchi’s got a worthy sequel to Cream

First came a post about ice cream, now just regular type..

You’ve probably by now heard a track called Cream by Frederico Franchi. It was one of the biggest jimjams of the Spring/Summer of ‘07 (I remember first hearing it on a video of a Busy P set; dude was wearing a necklace made of giant melon-sized shiny balls), and has been on heavy rotation ever since. In fact Pitbull just used the beat for a track featuring Lil Jon called Crazy. It’s pretty good.

BUT the main point of this post is that I just came across a remix of Joachim Garraud (perhaps most well known for remixing Love is Gone) which Franchi’s done. He put out a track called Pears a little while ago which I think was supposed to be Cream II, but I didn’t really hear much more than a hook to it. This one though, it’s got Franchi’s signature synth sound and BAAAAAAANGZ. I’m so hyped to hear this on a club system and I think you’ll like it a lot too.

Now who wants ice cream?

About a year and a half ago, during some oddly warm days of late Winter/early Spring I was crashing at Jess Jubilee’s apartment in Williamsburg. I found it hilarious that pretty much at the very moment when it became short sleeve weather outside, the ice cream trucks began blaring down the streets as if they’d been impatiently idling in garages ever since late September. That afternoon I made a track called Softee’s Theme; a pretty simple Bmore edit of a popular ice cream truck song. This afternoon in Philly I heard one go by and thought about playing it out again.. which I may or may not do, but you should grab it if you want it!

Extra points if anyone can tell me where the vocals are sampled from..

Flosstradamus remix Bloc Party

A few months ago I was up at Flossy Manor and the dudes Josh and Curt were putting the finishing touches on this remix. It has some big room elements and some bmore style swing beats peppered here and there. Pretty versatile track, could work well at the end of an opening set or at peak time as well. Pretty proud of J+C on this one; definitely showing they’re just as capable with Logic and some midi controllers are they are behind the decks. Get’em! (Photo by EveryoneIsFamous)

New Will Roc track: The Definition of Bounce

I’m loving the different directions the Bmore peeps are taking things. There’s vocal-driven tracks from Say Wut, DJ Sega and the Brick Bandits crew are killin it with crazy drum programming and mad “what!”’s, and DJ King Tutt’s exploring the area between electro and techno with a distinctly club feel to it. DJ Will Roc’s latest stuff hasn’t really fit into any particular camp; his stuff has been a lot more light (not that this is bad, check my Mishka mix for his track Piano Man). He just posted up a track called The Definition of Bounce, which takes a page from King Tutt’s book but synthesizes things with Will Roc’s more melodic approach for a real nice track. It’s a bit more of a DJ tool than it is a song but hey, that’s not bad either!

Treasure Fingers - Cross the Dancefloor (Flufftronix remix) .. And I’m moving!

Hey all! A few months ago I put together a remix of Cross the Dancefloor which I’ve been playing out pretty regularly, and has been heard on BBC Radio 1 a couple times. I’ve always planned on giving it away, but have been holding out on release until the day the Treasure Fingers EP comes out to spread it around. So since the EP’s finally up on digital download sites (support ‘em!) here’s my mix in full 320kbps glory:

Also, I’m moving out to Philly this weekend! So so so psyched. This will of course mean many more East Coast appearances (and easier flights over oceans.. hint hint Europeeps!); I even have a few gigs coming up as I head out there:

8/7 - Band in a Hat II @ Rachel’s Café, Bloomington IN (I’m playing drums and drum machines in a band with members randomly chosen a month ago)
8/8 - Rad Summer Dance Party @ Bloomington Playwrights Project (with Localhero from Chicago, Trash Menagerie and Noise/Floor Crew; Everything Continues, Figure, and Ready T)
8/15 - Crescendolls @ Barbary, Philadelphia PA w/Lauren Flax, JHN RDN, and Gregg Foreman
8/16 - U.N.I.T.Y @ Hugs w/Lauren Flax and JD Samson

On my Myspace: Pumpkins’ Watchmen trailer track edit and Treasure Finger remix

Often times when I’m working on new tracks I’ll layer another track underneath to get a good structure and concept down, and then eventually take them out and replace hooks, basslines etc. with original stuff. I did that last week with a track that’s going to be called Get On the Floor—it started out as an edit of the song on the trailer for The Watchmen; an old Smashing Pumpkins song. Thought it might work as a dark club track.. but now that the original track is done I’m not sure if I’ll ever use it. Maybe?

Also up is my Treasure Fingers remix; full quality download coming as soon as that EP gets released. Sooner or later I’m sure!

But ya. Tracks up on that myspace. Check em out.

Buffetlibre DJs “Rewind” Project

I stumbled across a Moulinex remix of Come On by Pineapples (thx Markus) this afternoon, and but a few clicks later discovered some Spanish dudes called Buffetlibre DJs released an online* remix compilation called Rewind. It’s all 80s remixes by current electro and indie outfits. You can check out all the tracks individually on the site, cop the mixtape, or download the ~450mb .zip. All for free! Streaming mp3s and a video after the jump

Portishead Reimaged*

A project I worked on earlier this year has been in the tubes for awhile, and has just been spat out onto the internets: PORTISHEAD REIMAGINED. It’s an album consisting of remixes entirely sourced from Portishead’s album Third; released for free by my Chicago peeps Noise/Floor Crew.

The track I did is called Threads; it’s a dreary downtempo slow burner I attempted to rework into a dreary uptempo banger. Came out a little more strobe lighty than I was going for—and I did have another version in the works but I it went way too far out there into pitch slide arpeggio-land.

Anyway. Here’s my track:

Portishead - Threads (Flufftronix remix)

Check out Trash Menagerie for links to the rest of the tracks individually or just grab the .zip and call it a day.

*(yes I know it’s actually called Portishead Reimagined, but when I downloaded it I coulda sworn it said “reimaged” so imma go with that)
